Bill Heughins is a lifelong Connecticut resident who has spent nearly three decades serving his community as an educator, mentor and coach. Bill grew up in East Lyme where he learned the value of hard work and perseverance at an early age. His father worked his entire career as a machinist at Electric Boat, and Bill became the first in his family to attend college—an achievement that shaped his deep belief in the power of public education and opportunity.

Bill has lived in Pawcatuck since 1998 and has taught Social Studies in North Stonington Public Schools since 1997. For almost 30 years, he has helped students understand history, civic responsibility, and the importance of being informed and engaged citizens. He holds a bachelor’s degree in History and Economics, as well as a master’s degree in Secondary Education.

Bill has been married to his college sweetheart, Marika Heughins, for 30 years. Together, they raised three daughters who all attended Stonington Public Schools before going on to earn advanced degrees. As a parent, educator, and longtime community member, Bill understands the challenges facing local families and the importance of strong schools, honest leadership, and thoughtful decision-making.
Bill coached several sports, including the girls tennis team, girls middle school and high school basketball, and middle school cross country. He also coached his daughter’s Little League softball team. Now, he is the head of the Model UN club at Wheeler High School. The club participates in Model UN conferences at UConn’s Storrs campus and will be going to New York this year to see the actual operations at the UN headquarters. Bill also co-coaches the debate team that has won debate competitions all over the state.

Now, Bill Heughins is running to represent the 43rd District because he believes local government should reflect the same values he has lived by his entire life: transparency, integrity, and kindness. He is committed to listening to constituents, working collaboratively, and making a meaningful difference in the community he has proudly called home for decades.
